Teletransportación: ¿Ficción o realidad cercana?

La serie estadounidense de televisión Star Trek (Viaje a las Estrellas) tiene entre sus méritos más reconocidos inspirar a los científicos a la hora de crear nuevos aparatos, como es el caso del celular de la actualidad. Sin embargo, una de las novedades más interesantes de la obra está en la teletransportación, que ya generó intentos infructuosos entre muchos investigadores, mientras otros esperan su materialización en los próximos años.Todo parece indicar que el desarrollo de la humanidad podrá alcanzar tal invento, pero la otra cara de la moneda constituye la dificultad en estos momentos de lograrlo debido al avance tecnológico logrado hasta el siglo XXI.
Un invento complicado
Por una parte, los expertos consideran que para lograr esa teletransportacion es necesario tener un ordenador que en la actualidad aun no existe; sin embargo el inicio de la comprensión del tema radica en ¿qué es la teletransportación?
En el año 2264 la tripulación del USS Enterprise realizaba sus aventuras en el Universo y para saltar desde la nave a un planeta o hacia otra nave empleaban la teletransportación.
Liderados por el Capitán Kirk, en la primera temporada, hicieron las delicias de pequeños y mayores durante muchos años, hasta el punto de inspirar a los científicos para la creación de aparatos tan útiles como el actual celular.
Además, también aparecieron la génesis de las Palm o computadoras de manos y las Tablet PC, entre otros artilugios.
Pero aun faltan más de 200 años, si tenemos en cuenta la fecha de la saga, para esa realidad, y los investigadores ya dan los primeros pasos para lograr algo tan controvertido, hasta el punto de que para unos es posible y para otros no.
Teleportación, o teletransportación, constituye el proceso de mover objetos o partículas de un lugar a otro instantáneamente, sin usar métodos convencionales de transporte.
Literalmente quiere decir "desplazar a distancia", lo que puede ser entendido como un desplazamiento que se produce sin necesidad de establecer contacto físico directo con el objeto.
Estas son descripciones de la palabra en Wikipedia, la novedosa enciclopedia de Internet que permite un contacto interactivo entre los usuarios y que hace muchos años, cuando comenzó Star Trek, se podría imaginar como algo imposible.
Por otro lado, es bueno recordar que la serie de Gene Roddenberry comenzó a transmitirse en 1966 y llegó a tener seis temporadas y 10 películas convirtiéndose en la segunda saga de este medio mas larga de la historia, de la televisión y el cine.
Y por otra parte, productores actuales pretenden estrenar una continuidad, precisamente en 2008. La cadena NBC la presentó, adelantándose en temas de tanta actualidad como la vida de la Tierra, la armonía, guerras, hambres, enfermedades, pobreza y humanidad, términos y problemas muy en boga.
Tecnología generada por Star Trek
Como dato curioso, en los diversos capítulos de la serie se pueden apreciar dispositivos o medios tecnológicos innovadores para la época en que se transmitió, muchos de ellos convertidos en realidad de forma masiva después.
Ese es el caso de las pantallas al tacto, los tableros de datos al igual que los Palms o Tablet PC que conocemos e incluso los intercomunicadores con sistemas de manos libres, y hasta los modelos de los teléfonos móviles.
Otros medios son el diagnóstico del interior del cuerpo sin necesidad de abrirlo, premonitorio de la Tomografía Axial Computarizada (TAC), el ordenador personal o la computadora que obedece a la voz.
Se añaden a la lista las cintas de memoria de idéntico tamaño al desarrollado posteriormente en el disquete de 3,5 o el empleo de los CDs, vistos en diversos episodios.
También Star Trek anuncia las nanosondas en el uso de la medicina, tecnología actual en experimentación y la antimateria como combustible.
Aunque de todo lo presente en esa saga, el teletransporte constituye, sin dudas, lo más curioso y esperado, incluso por los científicos.

La caída del dólar y la recesión de la economía más poderosa son vistos como un signo inequívoco de decadencia; sin embargo, el gendarme universal no está dispuesto a perder su predominio, ¿a cuántos "nuevos Irak" nos llevará? ¿Hasta dónde lo dejaremos llegar?
El fantasma de la recesión golpea fuerte en las entrañas del imperio y nada parece detenerlo. La Reserva Federal -por cuarta vez en los últimos cuatro meses-- debió bajar la tasa de interés en una magnitud sin precedentes para incentivar una mayor actividad. Seguramente el éxito de la medida no fue el esperado, ya que una quinta rebaja debió comunicarse apenas comenzado febrero.
Bush, por su parte, anunció medidas fiscales que alentarán el consumo directo con bombos y platillos, en un claro intento de mejorar de inmediato las alicaídas expectativas de los agentes. Pero así y todo, estos esfuerzos han resultado vanos: Wall Street sigue cayendo, y las perspectivas generales que hacen los propios analistas norteamericanos, para el corto y mediano plazo, auguran los vaticinios más negros que se le pueden hacer al sistema: caída del consumo, desaceleración, estancamiento, acciones a la baja, quiebras, aumento del desempleo, etc. Ni el más optimista defensor a ultranza del modelo puede decir otra cosa: en la primera y más "sólida" economía del Planeta, paradigma inexpugnable del funcionamiento capitalista, algo anda mal. Eso ya nadie lo puede negar. Aunque, seguramente, todos estos pronósticos hablarán de crisis coyuntural, o a lo sumo, dirán que la economía estadounidense está atravesando un ciclo de depresión que no se ha sabido sortear, u otras cosas por estilo. No dejarán de destacar la transitoriedad del fenómeno, ni tampoco de precisar que muy pronto se revertirá. Ahora, en nuestra modesta opinión, creemos que no es así, sino todo lo contrario: esta crisis responde a factores estructurales y a políticas "antieconómicas" permanentes. Esto determina, inexorablemente, que en el largo plazo la economía norteamericana seguirá padeciendo estos "males" a extremos sin precedentes. Del boom inmobiliario a la caída de las bolsas. Sin entrar a analizar las causas de fondo, la difícil situación que atraviesa la economía norteamericana de hoy, tiene su antecedente más inmediato en la debacle en el circuito de los préstamos hipotecarios que se precipitó a mitad del año pasado. Esto ya había obligado, tanto a la Reserva Federal como al Banco Central Europeo, a inyectar en sus plazas cientos y cientos de millones de dólares y de euros, para evitar la crisis generalizada en los mercados financieros de los países centrales. La excesiva liquidez de la economía norteamericana de los últimos años, el desmedido afán de lucro de los operadores inmobiliarios y sus socios banqueros, la falta de controles y transparencia que posibilitaba que se otorgaran préstamos sin las suficientes garantías, y hasta que los fondos de los mismos se desviaran para el consumo de bienes no durables, el creciente endeudamiento interno de millones de norteamericanos que están "en rojo" (que han rebasado sus posibilidades de crédito y también de pago) infló tanto el globo de la financiación hipotecaria que terminó por explotar. El creciente incumplimiento por parte de los deudores hipotecarios se transmitió de inmediato a toda la cadena financiera, que en épocas de bonanza se había sumado al boom inmobiliario norteamericano prestando a empresas constructoras o, "descontando" créditos con garantía hipotecaria de particulares. Las consecuencias son por todos conocidas, la caída estrepitosa en los niveles de actividad de la construcción, y un incontable número de entidades financieras con pérdidas millonarias o al borde de la quiebra. Clara muestra de cómo el afán de lucro desmedido (aun cuando éste se nutra de la especulación y de la falta de transparencia) pilar básico del sistema, puede ser también el motor de su derrumbe. El dólar: de Dios a monaguillo. Pero todo esto tiene un punto de partida: la excesiva liquidez de los últimos años de la economía norteamericana. La única economía en todo el Mundo que todavía puede darse el lujo de solventar, tan solo imprimiendo billetes de color verde o emitiendo bonos de la Reserva Federal, todos sus descalabros. Ya sea el que hizo posible un boom inmobiliario que ya sucumbió, o el que sustenta las sombrías pretensiones de ser el gendarme universal que Estados Unidos ha asumido a partir de las guerras de Afganistán y de Irak. Guerras que ya le han costado al gran país del norte cifras tan descomunales que superarían ampliamente el billón de dólares (o sea que ya se habrían gastado en ellas más de un millón de veces un millón de dólares). O ahora mismo, financiando los 157 mil millones que tiene de costo el paquete fiscal de devolución de impuestos que entregará a cada contribuyente individual un cheque por U$S 600, o a cada familia norteamericana uno por U$S 1.200, para que éstos lo vuelquen de inmediato al consumo interno que se viene desplomando. Que, dicho sea de paso, fomentar el consumo, es la mejor medida para salir de esta situación. Nadie lo duda, a pesar que desde siempre, tanto Estado Unidos como los organismos internacionales de crédito (el FMI, el Banco Mundial o el BID), hayan impuesto a nuestras economías pobres y subdesarrolladas, ante circunstancias similares, la receta opuesta: ajustes fiscales con aumento de impuestos y la baja del gasto social, que siempre perjudica a los más pobres que son los que terminan pagando mayoritariamente todas las crisis. Pero aquí el problema primordial es que, ni aún siendo la primera economía del mundo, se puede resistir este ritmo de gasto indefinidamente. La estrepitosa caída del dólar de los últimos tiempos lo está demostrando. El déficit fiscal norteamericano ha sido una constante en todas las administraciones desde Bush padre para acá, y ha crecido enormemente tanto en términos relativos como en términos absolutos. Por su parte, el déficit comercial norteamericano trepó de 84 mil millones en 1992 a 800 mil millones en 2007 multiplicándose casi por diez. Sólo China mantuvo un superávit comercial con Estados Unidos de U$S 250 mil millones el año pasado. Los gastos en defensa han alcanzado al 20% del PBI norteamericano en promedio en la última década. Las guerras antiterroristas contra el "eje de mal" se estima que insumirán otros 2 y medio billones de dólares en los próximos diez años. ¿Cuánto tiempo más se puede sostener esto? En los años 50 Norteamérica acaparaba la mitad de toda la riqueza que se producía en el Mundo. En el 2007 apenas llega al 25% del total, y con una manifiesta tendencia a la baja. Esa enorme porción de la torta la ha perdido a mano de las potencias emergentes. Por ahora China es el principal socio comercial de Estados Unidos pero, ¿qué pasaría si algún día el Banco de China decidiera desprenderse de los 900 mil millones de dólares que mantiene en bonos de la Reserva Federal en sus arcas? O si, por ejemplo, la OPEP decidiera dejar de utilizar como moneda para sus transacciones el dólar, o que algunos países con grandes reservas fueran cambiando la posición de las mismas a otra moneda que no fuera el dólar, ¿qué pasaría? Obviamente que la baja que viene sufriendo la divisa norteamericana de estos últimos tiempos se quedaría en pañales. y el dólar se desplomaría en caída libre marcando el principio del fin. Por algo ya ni Don Juan ni Doña María, previsores al máximo, guardan más dólares debajo del colchón, ahora prefieren al euro. El dólar, símbolo todopoderoso de la riqueza y del poder de Norteamérica, que presidía omnipotente todos los altares del capitalismo, ha pasado a hacer de monaguillo. La manifiesta debilidad de hoy de la "moneda del mundo", marca el inicio de un camino que ya no tiene retorno.El sueño americano y la realidad. Lógicamente que estas consideraciones se quedarían rengas si no nos detuviéramos un poco en los hombres y las mujeres que constituyen esta sociedad. Y de inmediato nos viene a la mente las imágenes de riqueza y opulencia que desde siempre nos ha mostrado la televisión norteamericana y el cine de Hollywood, donde el sueño americano se hace realidad para cada uno de los protagonistas. Pero en la vida real no hay protagonistas, sino gente común y corriente, gente de carne y hueso, para la cual la realidad es muy otra. Aunque traten de ocultarlo, la estadounidense es una sociedad que, para citar cifras oficiales (1) de 2006, condena a 37 millones de norteamericanos a vivir en la pobreza, de los cuales 13 millones son niños. Una sociedad que alberga en su seno a 47 millones de sus ciudadanos sin ningún tipo de cobertura médica, en un sistema de asistencia que tiene por principio básico que quien no paga no se atiende. No hablemos de otros tantos ciudadanos, o más, que sólo cuentan con seguros parciales de atención médica que excluyen muchos tratamientos "costosos", a los que sólo acceden quienes tienen muy altos ingresos. Un sistema de salud que privilegia exclusivamente el lucro de las corporaciones médicas y hospitalarias, y que ha sido considerado el más costoso e ineficiente del Mundo (si tomamos en cuenta la cantidad de personas cubiertas y la calidad y cantidad de actos médicos que éstas reciben en relación al total pagado por los seguros). Un sistema de salud del que, insistentemente, se viene anunciando que en los próximos 25 años irá a la banca rota porque, de seguir en estas condiciones, los seguros ni siquiera podrán cubrir el costo de las limitadas prestaciones que se brindan. Hablamos de una sociedad donde muchos analistas locales, para no ser menos, auguran, también, la quiebra de los fondos de retiro en un futuro no muy lejano (malos manejos de los fondos de inversión, menores aportes, prestaciones por más tiempo a cada uno de los beneficiarios, por citar algunas de las razones). Reafirmando la desconfianza que está generando este sistema, se está constatando que los norteamericanos de ingresos más bajos se están jubilando mucho más tarde de lo que lo hacían antaño, y no es precisamente porque se tenga ganas de trabajar hasta morir. Y dejamos fuera de estas observaciones, para no extendernos más, a los casi 20 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que están padeciendo las penurias que todos conocemos. Indocumentados que, además de todo, se encuentran varios escalones por debajo de los norteamericanos más pobres. Por supuesto que toda esta gente conoce el sueño americano, pero como nosotros, por haberlo visto en alguna película.La decadencia y la guerra. Ahora, no podemos ser ingenuos. Este anunciado declive de Estados Unidos, que inevitablemente lo llevará a dejar de ser la primera potencia económica del planeta, no significa, necesariamente, que lo mismo le vaya a ocurrir como potencia militar. Es más, nos atrevemos a afirmar que seguramente le suceda justamente lo opuesto. Mal que nos pese, en los años por venir seguramente veamos nuevas "guerras de Irak" en otros lugares, por petróleo o por cualquier otro recurso natural vital a los intereses norteamericanos. Ojalá que nos equivoquemos. Es lo que más desearíamos. Esperemos, entonces, por el futuro de nuestros hijos y nietos, que la vocación belicista que ha caracterizado a este nuevo Imperio de Occidente, gran gendarme que no sabe de límites y que está dispuesto a todo por no perder su predominio, --lo que también en este sentido lo hace parecerse tanto a la Roma decadente que presagió el fin--, en algún momento deberá ser puesto en su lugar por el resto del mundo, o, lamentablemente, el Mundo todo dejará de ser tal, por lo menos, para la vida humana. Muchos estadounidenses piensan hoy que a lo único que hay que tenerle miedo es al miedo. Las libertades civiles han sido recortadas, se han mutilado sólidas tradiciones del país bajo la bandera de la "guerra antiterrorista". Y algo más: hasta los expertos más proclives a exaltar la bonanza económica de EE.UU. pronostican tiempos muy duros por venir. Es natural.Hillary Clinton encabeza las preferencias demócratas para la candidatura presidencial en los comicios del 2008. Pero el candidato a presidente de ese partido que más temen los republicanos es Barack Obama, un muy temprano opositor a la invasión y ocupación de Irak.
Una reciente encuesta de la empresa del ramo, Zogby Poll, muestra que cualquier candidato republicano importante derrotaría a Hillary: Rudolph Giuliani obtendría el 43 por ciento de los votos contra el 40 de la esposa de Clinton, Michael Huckabee, el 46 contra el 40, Mitt Romney el 43 contra el 40, Thomas Thompson, el 44 contra el 40, y John McCain el 42 contra el 38, respectivamente (www.zogby.com, 26-11-07). Todo lo contrario ocurriría con Obama.
El precandidato afroamericano vencería a todos ellos: a Giuliani, con el 46 por ciento de los sufragios contra el 41, a Huckabee por 46 contra 40, a Romney por 46 contra 40, a Thompson por 47 contra 40 y a McCain por 45 contra 38, respectivamente. Hay otros datos que confirmarían la cuesta abajo de Hillary: los candidatos demócratas al Congreso superan del 10 al 15 por ciento a los republicanos en las preferencias de voto –según la encuesta de que se trate–, mientras que la precandidata a presidenta Mrs. Clinton va de 3 a 6 puntos detrás de los precandidatos republicanos. Extraña es la idiosincrasia de la opinión pública estadounidense: una mayoría, considera que la guerra de Irak fue y es un error, y otra mayoría que Irán es la principal amenaza que padece la seguridad nacional.
Hillary no descarta el uso de bombas nucleares contra Irán, más bien lo favorece. Obama propuso invadir Pakistán. Los ardores bélicos demócratas no van a la zaga de los republicanos. Juntos –370 votos por el "sí" contra 49 por el "no" en un órgano legislativo dominado por los primeros– aprobaron el miércoles pasado el presupuesto de guerra más gigantesco que se conoce en la historia de EE.UU.: 696.000 millones de dólares.
De esa suma se destinan "apenas" 189.000 millones a las guerras de Irak y Afganistán –el 27 por ciento– y la mayor parte del resto financiará nuevos programas armamentistas. El representante demócrata Ike Skelton, presidente del comité de servicios armados de la Cámara baja, subrayó que eso "es bueno para nuestras tropas, es bueno para nuestras familias" (AP, 12-12-07). No explicó por qué.
El liderato demócrata no vinculó la aprobación del presupuesto de guerra a la retirada de las tropas de Irak, como era su propósito declarado. Se acortan las diferencias entre los dos partidos –si las hubo– en este rubro. Pero una encuesta de NBC News/Wall Street Journal realizada del 1o al 5 de noviembre registró que el 50 por ciento de los interrogados votaría al candidato demócrata –cualquiera fuere– y sólo el 35 por ciento se pronunció por los republicanos (online.wsj.com).
Es lógico entonces que importantes líderes oficialistas hayan comenzado a alejarse de la Casa Blanca. Hasta el abanderado del cambio de nombre de "papas fritas a la francesa" por "papas fritas de la libertad" y de "tostadas francesas" por "tostadas de la libertad" en las cafeterías de la Casa Blanca (www.cnn.com, 12-3-03), el representante Walter B. Jones, comenzó a atacar al gobierno Bush por su belicismo. Los demócratas se aproximan a los "halcones-gallina" y éstos comienzan a desbandarse. Es curioso, sí.
La indagación relativa a las elecciones presidenciales del año que viene en EE.UU. nace en un contexto muy particular. El pantano de Irak ha socavado la política de inspirar miedo que W. Bush aplicó y aplica todavía. Parafraseando a Franklin Delano Roosevelt, muchos estadounidenses piensan hoy que a lo único que hay que tenerle miedo es al miedo. El desastre inmobiliario puso de relieve que el sistema económico de EE.UU. ha vivido de las especulaciones generadas por el sector financiero en detrimento sobre todo de la pequeña y mediana industria. "La economía del militarismo fue el sostén clave de la estabilidad de los negocios durante más de medio siglo –señala el especialista Steve Fraser–, pero ahora, como en la época de Vietnam, los deficits provocados por el financiamiento de la guerra exacerban un dilema mucho más abarcador" (www.tomdispatch.com, 10-12-07).
Peligran industrias, comunidades y economías regionales. La subida del precio del petróleo incrementa costos, profundiza la crisis latente y aumenta el déficit de la balanza de pagos del país, que nadie sabe cuánto tiempo más podrá soportar. Naciones clave de Asia y Medio Oriente están pasando sus reservas al euro y a otras monedas más seguras que el dólar. Alguien dijo que "la guerra es salud para el Estado". Se ve.
